Samsung seems to have leaked out a minor yet important detail related to Google’s upcoming software update codenamed Android N. While not much has been known about Google’s upcoming version of Android, a user on the XDA forums seems to have spotted something interesting indeed.
According to the post, Samsung seems to have indicated that Android N may actually come with stock stylus support, meaning that the code for the same may come baked in.
The same was indicated on Samsung’s developer page with the Look API (that is used for controlling the S Pen stylus features). The note added stated that all of these features would be “deprecated in Android N”. While it sounds a bit weird as to why Samsung would kill its own Look API, there are other questions that can be deducted from this move. Is Android N going to pack in a similar API?
While this is a surprising move, this is indeed not the first time Google has borrowed features from manufacturers. The above mentioned case indeed benefits Samsung, as they will have little to look into similar to the uphill battle that it was facing with the heart rate monitor and the fingerprint reader (for developer support) when they showed up on the Galaxy S5.
Deprecating a feature as Xda revealed has happened in the past and this often happens only when a feature (or API) is not needed, meaning that Google themselves will shortly be adding a similar feature.
Surprisingly, native support for Stylus’ have been in the rumour mill for long. However, Samsung is the only company that does a good job with a stylus so far (LG and Nvidia also use the stylus). So it is a bit odd if Google adds support for the same considering that this just one manufacturer who is focused on using the stylus.
